History of Counts Platers’ Palace House
Once this property belonged to the family Platers (Plateriai) – a very noble and honourable family, famous not so much for their wealth, but for special understanding of honour and patriotism. After reconstruction of this building, an open gallery oriented to the inner yard was designed. In 1817, the asset was sold to exclusive and well-known nobleman Count M. Valickis; afterwards it was passed to the University of Vilnius. Then until 1939, regardless of changing owners, the buildings were on their decline, and eventually they reached us only with a few buildings. In order to re-establish the G. Pliaterienė Palace, in 1808 the contours were clearly marked in the plan of Vilnius city. Available material on Platers’ estates, owned in Lithuania, was reviewed to substantiate the facade solutions. The mentioned estates included the buildings, attributed to the Classicism, with characteristic elements, porticoes and galleries. Having analysed the iconographic-historical material and evaluated the complicated architectural evolution, the most valuable period for restoration of the former buildings was selected, i.e. the end of the eighteenth century - the beginning of the nineteenth century.
